DesignCoach discusses mixing mismatched dining chairsEach Monday on the DesignQuotient™ blog, Los Angeles interior designer DesignCoach™ James Swan answers readers’ questions. Post your design dilemma. DesignCoach™ can help you find the solution.

This week the DesignCoach discusses mixing mismatched dining chairs.

Question for the guru: We are finally about to furnish our empty dining room. We intend to use a round table to buy us some more space in the room. My husband feels all the dining room chairs must match when a round table is used. I disagree. I’d love two upholstered modern wingbacks along with 6 other chairs that are wooden and upholstered. Is it acceptable to mismatch these chairs with the round table? If so, any proof in print? He is very matchy matchy/symmetrical…and needs proof.

    A. Bravo to you for your thoughtful approach to the project of your dining room furnishings and to your selection of a round table. Personally (all architectural considerations aside) I am a fan of a round table for dining. Great conversation without the hierarchical “thrones” presiding over what otherwise might be a relaxed dinner party!

So as to your question of the use of mismatched chairs at a round table: in the broadest sense the answer is yes as our research images illustrate. However I might offer an additional thought. Why limit the number of modern wingback chairs to two? It occurs to me that an even distribution of chairs (4 wing and 4 armless) might offer a more relaxed experience than if you held to the subtle, yet unavoidable, idea which two “big chairs” underscores.

Here are a few images I hope are helpful as you finalize your decision.

    1. 50/50 with the chairs as noted here in a lovely dinning room by Charlotte Moss.
    Mix mismatched dining chairs half-and-half

    2. An antique pedestal table and Windsor Chairs (2 Captain Chairs and 4 armless) look good but seems to cling to a notion of hierarchy.
Classic mix of Captain's chairs and armless dining chairs

    3. Just for fun here’s a round table with completely mismatched chairs by Decorator Eric Hughes. I fear this approach would drive your dear husband mad.
Designer Eric Hughes successfully uses completely mismatched dining chairs

Good luck and send us pictures of the finished product.

DesignCoach discusses skylightsEach Monday on the DesignQuotient™ blog, Beverly Hills Interior Designer DesignCoach™ James Swan answers readers’ questions. Post your design dilemma. DesignCoach™ can help you find the solution.

This week the DesignCoach discusses skylights.

    Q. What are your thoughts on skylights? Set aside the usual concerns over installation and construction, we have a very good contractor. However, some have raised other issues about temperature, letting in too much of the outdoors, etc. I was thinking that since we’re on the East Coast it would be a great way to get more light into the house — yes, year-round. Some winters, like this year, make you feel like you might contract scurvy from the lack of sun and warmth. I saw some that have the blinds built into the windows between the panes of glass. You operate the opening and closing via a wireless switch. I think I’m right, what am I missing?

    A. Skylights can be wonderful additions to the home. If the issues of installation are easily addressed (a good contractor is worth their weight in gold!) then the only question remaining is the amount of heat and light these graceful “holes” provide. I am always a bit cautious about skylights on west facing roofs. They can be heaven in the winter — but can be hell in the summer. Look carefully at how the placement of a skylight will interact with the movement of the sun in your sky. Log onto www.GoogleEarth.com where you can track the sun over your home. This can be helpful in making a final decision. You are also correct that there are windows that offer integrated shades. One can also install fabric or woven wood shades inside the frame of a skylight which accomplishes the same end result but can add to the overall beauty of a room in a way that the integrated product doesn’t. When function and beauty are both addressed the results can be very rewarding. Enjoy.

Want more natural light? Consider skylights.

Photo: Want more natural light in your home? Skylights might be just the right solution for you. The skylights shown above use electronically controlled shades to adjust light levels and provide insulation when needed.

DesignFind: Global Design Events Calendar Each Monday on the DesignQuotient™ blog, DesignCoach™ Beverly Hills interior designer James Swan answers readers’ questions. Post your design dilemma. DesignCoach™ can help you find the solution.

This week on the DesignCoach: What is one quick-fix project to make your home more beautiful?

    Q. My wife has an on-going 10-year “honey do” list for me. It never seems to end and as she reads or sees new things, my list grows. I’m pretty handy and saw that she had visited your website on our home computer. So I’m appealing to you James Swan, what is one thing can I do (small or big, but I’d prefer to not tear down any walls this weekend) to make our house nicer? You know, to get a head-start on this year’s trends or home projects. I’m willing to tackle something that’s usually in her purview: drapes, lamps, pillows and the like. Give me one thing I can do today that will wow her. With Mother’s Day and all on the calendar, I could use a head-start–not to mention the brownie points.

    A. Do you have a twin brother? Your wife is a lucky woman to have you (and your tool belt) in her home and life! Honestly, at the top of the list is this rather simple but hugely effective task. It’s not glamorous, but it will dramatically change every room of your home. Replace every light switch in your home with a dimmer then install in-cord dimmers on every table and floor lamp in the house. With an eye toward creating soft pools of light you will add greatly to the beauty and enjoyment of every room in the house.

Lighting and ambiance go hand-in-hand. Adding dimmers can dramatically impact your interiors.

DesignCoach: Design for your lifestyle Each Monday on the DesignQuotient™ blog, Beverly Hills Interior Designer DesignCoach™ James Swan answers readers’ questions. Post your design dilemma. The DesignCoach™ can help you find the solution.

This week on the DesignCoach: with no shortage of interior design advice out there, what will work best for your home in the long run?

Q: Jim, I spend a lot of time watching the various TV programs and reading what’s left of the home improvement and “shelter” magazines. Here’s my concern: All these people talk about is what’s good for the value of the home. The home shows and the so-called experts on these TV shows seem obsessed with what’s going to “sell well.” I want to live in my house or at least own it for a decade or more. I like dark colors in small spaces. I like antique electric fixtures that I can buy at a flea market and have rewired and installed. I like mixing materials. That makes me comfortable. So given that I don’t care what some experts think, what should I be mindful of when making these choices — knowing that it’s going to be at least 10 years before I sell my house? (And frankly, I’m not sure all those experts know what will look good to a potential home buyer in 10 years, so I could follow their advice and still have to spend money to “stage” my house or give it “curb appeal.”) Can you tell I’m a little confused about too-much advice out there?

A: I have always been of the opinion asking the right question will provide us with the best answers. It seems to me that people purchase homes for one of two reasons: (1) to flip and sell at a profit; and (2) to create a home for themselves and their family. Recent events in our economy have, to a great extent rendered option No. 1 extinct, for the time being. Those days (if they ever truly existed) are gone which leaves us with No. 2 and the rest of our lives. I would encourage you to remain true to your heart. Listen carefully to your needs and desires as reflected in the place you call home and build a nest which makes you happy. Whether you are there for 10 months, 10 years, or the rest of your life, your home should make you happy.

    DesignCoach: Design for your lifestyle
Photo: There is no shortage of interior design advice and design rules—but what if you have eclectic taste? What if you prefer dark colors in small spaces and finding antique light fixtures to rewire? The best design advice is to do what makes you happiest in your home.

Let us know if we can help with your design dilemma. Send us your questions.

2008 AIA Merit Award Winner / Design Excellence Award Power and Light by Helix Architecture + Design
This bridge is not a bridge for people, nor a bridge for cars. Functioning as a link between the crossroads art district and the entertainment district, it is a utilitarian bridge to house power lines; a simple truss, clad in black zinc.

The cladding, through bumps and perforations, tells the story of its simple function – to house electricity. Taking inspiration from the 3 phases of power, sine waves are repented by 2 arcing movements of perforations on the zinc cladding, each one telling the motion of power. The third wave is represented through form, giving the skin undulations and shadows. The cladding was punched with small bumps, representing the field of electrons which electricity requires for movement.

Like electricity, the bridge becomes more noticeable at night. By day it lies dormant, with little impact on the surroundings. Lit internally with LEDs, the bridge pulses to the north, identical to the electricity held inside.

The Chester Beatty Library, Dublin, is one of the finest collections in the world of Indian paintings and calligraphies from that time. On display will be works commissioned by two of the greatest Mughal emperors of India: Jahangir (reigned 1605-1627) and Shah Jahan (reigned 1627-1658), who is best known for building the Taj Mahal. Bail-out Decorating Part IV: The Circus of Circumstance As is true for any path to success the journey is a sum total of small steps. At times the act of taking a single step can bear resemblance to shouldering the weight of the world but it remains a step nonetheless; proceeded by one of a similar description while anticipating fruit from the same family tree. As the old tune reminds us in what can be an annoyingly perky platitude, “put one foot in front of the other…”

Having managed this simple concept we do, oddly enough, find ourselves moving; a gentle stirring on our forehead reminding us of the victory of forward motion. For my birthday this year a friend sent me the tiniest turtle carved from stone. Her note asked me to contemplate my own “turtle steps” and to never discount their cumulative power.

So today, as we consider steps toward a more beautiful home I suggest we think about the beauty of the background. I once heard it said that a beautiful room truly is beautiful when emptied of its contents. This is only possible if great thought and beautiful execution have been applied to the space rendering the backgrounds worthy of notice. As the headlines greeting us each morning continue to deliver messages of world-wide financial challenge we might still find ourselves with more time than treasure. This being the case it may be a good time to consider our own backgrounds (in our home, of course) and find fun, productive projects for the whole family.

Here are 3 tools to help you with your own background checks:

Remember the concept; our wee little room has been emptied of furnishings so pay attention to the following:

    1. What is the condition of the floor beneath your feet? If wood, what is the condition? Is it time for a good cleaning with Murphy’s Oil or is it time to break out the circular sander? As lovely as hardwood floors are, they can also look sad and worn. Assess your wood and be clear about how to put its best foot forward. Much the same can be said for carpeted floors, so look hard at the condition of your carpeting. Is it time for a good cleaning (certainly this can be done with the help of the family and a good piece of rental equipment) or is it time for more serious solutions. You will only know the answer when you take a good, hard look at the floor beneath your feet.

    2. Walls. What is true on the floor is also true for the walls in your room. In what condition are they? Really. Now is not the time to pretend or to believe the “precious little stories” we tell ourselves. Either the condition of the surfaces of your walls pass musters or they don’t. Paint? Is it chipped, faded, coated or cracked? Might be time for a brush with freshness. Wallpaper? Are the seams tight; are there rips and tears? Have the colors faded from sun exposure or has the surface simply collected dust? Tell yourself the truth as you look long and hard.

    3. Ceiling. The forgotten plane in many rooms–the ceiling affords a sixth surface, for good or for bad. Is that popcorn I see? Possibly cottage cheese? The roof over our heads is never at its best when masquerading as food product. You want smooth plaster as a starting point from which to explore all the many wonderful options. But for now let’s focus on the same principles as applied to the floors and walls beneath.

This is a good time to look closely at our walls, floors & ceilings
Photo: When we find ourselves with more time than treasure, it can be the ideal opportunity to give our attention to our home’s background.

    Palazzo Reale
    Milan, Italy
    www.cosmit.it/

Great projects, great displays and great crowds will provide the basic ingredients for what is universally regarded as the key event par excellence at global level in the home furnishing sector. Alongside the Salone Internazionale del Mobile, now in its 48th edition, together with the International Furnishing Accessories Exhibition this year will be Euroluce, the eagerly-awaited International Lighting Exhibition that sets the sectorial benchmark with its wide range and broad spectrum of goods that go to make up a unique lighting sector scenario – from light sources to domestic lighting, from technical illumination to urban illumination – embracing both technological and formal innovation. A major collateral event dedicated to light will also be held in the city.

SaloneSatellite, that unmissable event and great crowd-pulling catalyst, will be held again this year, with its line-up of creative young talent at the service of businesses.

Again this year we will be working in partnership with the Municipality of Milan which, for the third time, has offered us its prestigious headquarters at Palazzo Reale. This time it will serve as the venue for a truly special and unique event that will tie modern and antique furnishing in with a special pedigree mapping out the origins of Made in Italy. Visit www.cosmit.it/ for additional information.
