Joy in the Garden

Webster’s Dictionary defines joy as “the emotion of great delight or happiness caused by something exceptionally good or satisfying.” The kind folk at Webster’s are, however, no help to us as we ponder the size or scale of a thing which might be considered “good or satisfying” and thus could stir in us the emotion of joy. So left to our own devices we must decide. What’s the tipping point in a things scale or size that allows us to celebrate the defined emotion?

On this day after the Memorial Holiday I suggest that even the smallest of stirrings should illicit, from honest folks, the rumblings of joy. If we determine to hold out for something Big; really Big before we let slip with this thoroughly bridled emotion then we, I fear, may be waiting quite some time. But, if we open our eyes to the world just beyond the tip of our noses we might be surprised by what we find.

For instance as I type this morning I’m flanked on the right and on the left by two Yorkies, Max and Mickey. They are peacefully asleep; aware but not bothered by my insistent pecking and always ready to look up at me with the knowing and loving eyes. Call me sentimental but that qualifies, in my book, as a “good or satisfying” moment. When I look around my house I see pictures that spark memories, both “good” and “satisfying”.

There are objects; gifts from friends or purchases made with someone special both of which recall to me reasons I have to be full of joy. Look in to the eyes of a neighbor; shake the hand of a stranger; watch the face of a spouse, a partner or a friend and see if the spark of joy doesn’t cause your heart to jump a bit.

In these small moments it doesn’t matter what has happened in or around our lives. The losses, the pain, the fear or the anxiety are all real but for a minute or two our re-connection with Joy, and the path that brought, matter much more.

Dining Room with Oak Floors

DesignCoach: Help Me with My Wood Floors!

Each Monday on the DesignQuotient™ blog, DesignCoach™ Beverly Hills interior designer James Swan answers readers’ questions. Post your design dilemma. DesignCoach™ can help you find the solution.

This week on the DesignCoach: Help Me with My Wood Floors!

Q. I want to either have my wood floors refinished or get new wood
floors. I’m not big on having to move everything out of the house for
the sanding. What are the pros and cons of new floor surfaces? Will
older wooden floors add value to the house? Or keep value?

A: Sorry to say but either option will require an inconvenience to your life. Refinishing and installing new (old?) wood floors are both messy time consuming projects and should be carefully considered. My question to you is what do you wish to achieve by this project? If the solid wood floors currently in your home have never been resurfaced and you wish to have a fresh look then refinishing is the answer. If, however, you wish to have a different species of wood on your floors or if the existing wood is worn and can not be refinished then replacing the wood is required.

Secure the names of two or three wood floor specialists in our area. Ask them to your home for a quote. Ask questions and take careful notes. You can learn much from this process and move you steps closer to a more beautiful home.

The Quiet Life

Surviving the Times; Things to Edit from Your Home

Whether with the assistance of auction specialists; Craigs List or the nearest curb, it seems people everywhere are simplifying their lives by divesting themselves of “things” they no longer require. Its funny how moments ago the “need” to posses lured us all down a path of consumption that now feels slightly embarrassing. That’s all right. You are not alone.

In fact you are in the company of good people who, as people will, jumped headlong into the silliest of behaviors and now wish there were a graceful way to exit this stage they’ve found themselves on. Wish I could help you with a great strategy for a vanishing act…but I’m too busy photographing my excesses and posting them on the internet for sale.

What I can offer today are the following suggestions of two things we might just be better off without:

1. Television. I’ve probably lost many of you with this suggestion and if so, sorry. I ditched mine a few months ago and once I got done walking around my house like a dazed tourist in Time Square I realized how very little I was missing. I get my news on the internet and watch movies when I want to be visually entertained. The bulk of my “down time” has been spent reading. Since January I have completed 12 books and am blissfully working my way through number 13. Suddenly I have more time for what I decide really matters and that, my Dear Reader, is a beautiful thing.
2. Precious Things. I had a “Lord of The Rings” event recently and watched all three installments back to back. “Precious” as a character was unavoidable. As I look around my home, however, I decided that, like the object in the films, my “precious things” might need to be chucked into a burning lake too. What I’d like to suggest is that you evaluate the worth to you and your family of things in your home that require exaggerated amounts of maintenance. I would not presume to tell you how much is too much or for that matter what might appear on your list, but when viewed on the Really Big Scale of Life it’s interesting how many “things” can be tossed into the fire in favor of time with our loved ones or doing things we really are passionate about.

Each Monday on the DesignQuotient™ blog, DesignCoach™ Los Angeles interior designer James Swan answers readers’ questions. Post your design dilemma. DesignCoach™ can help you find the solution.

This week on the DesignCoach: What’s wrong with white walls?

Q. What’s wrong with white walls? Everyone seems down on painted white walls. I like the clean, fresh look. I don’t have kids. I have a lot of art that I want to put on the walls. And I don’t mind maintaining the white. Did I miss a memo?

alta-loma_dining-room-_blue_crop

A. Nothing could be more simple while at the same time present a challenge. If white walls are what you want then white walls are what you should have. Period. End of discussion. But which white? At one time a paint manufacturer we use had more than 50 shades of white in their offerings. Some whites are better than others in specific applications. Some are warmer than others. Some are cooler than others. So yes, have white walls but take time to explore the wide range of possibilities this palette offers. The right white can make for a very memorable room.

Let us know if we can help with your design dilemma. Send us your questions.

    find contemporary interior designer

Each Monday on the DesignQuotient™ blog, DesignCoach™ James Swan answers readers’ questions. Post your design dilemma. DesignCoach™ can help you find the solution.

This week on the DesignCoach: How to find contemporary interior designers to hire

    Q. I don’t know if there’s an interior designers’ code–and if there is such a thing, I wouldn’t want you to violate it–BUT, can you give me some insider’s tips on hiring and what to expect from a professional interior designer? We have a design center not far from our house and it’s not open to the public, it’s “trade only,” which I think means actual interior designers and the like. Do I pay by the hour? The project? Can I find a list of credible ones somewhere? Does hiring a pro automatically mean it will cost significantly more? Does everything have to be tufted? Flowery? Please help, I don’t want to do it all myself, but I have a lot of opinions about what I’ll tolerate in my house and what I’ll spend my hard-earned money on.

How to find an interior designer
Photo: Home design projects may require the services of a skilled professional

    A. If you are clear that you do not want to do the designing of your home by yourself then hiring a professional makes great sense. Here are six steps that will help you make this professional relationship work for you.

    1. Ask around. Speak with friends, neighbors and colleagues and find out who they have used or are using. Collect three or four names.
    2. Call the designer and inquire about their services. As a professional, they should be able to clearly speak about their work process, both the creative and the practical. Request from them, in simple written form, how they work which includes how they charge for their services. As everyone approaches this in a slightly different manner it is helpful to have it in writing. Also request a list of references who you can call.
    3. After doing your homework (speak with all references and review their business methods) decide who you feel comfortable with and are interested in learning more about.
    4. Schedule a face-to-face interview, at their office, with the designers you find of interest. Ask to see their work-in-process, review their portfolio and discuss with them the project you are considering. Narrow your list down to two.
    5. Schedule a second interview at your home, for the final two. By this time you should have a good idea of who you feel you can work with. Remember you are hiring them. They are not hiring you.
    6. Always have a written agreement signed by both parties.

Be clear with yourself and with the designer as to why you are hiring them. Stick to your guns while respecting the professional you have hired. Rely on their expertise. Listen carefully and with an open mind to all their ideas but remember, in the end it is your home. They should respect this as you respect the many ideas they will bring with them which can make your home more beautiful.

Let us know if we can help with your design dilemma. Send us your questions.

    What Color is Your Recession?
Like a pond recently disrupted by a belligerent stone; the ripples of today’s world-wide economic ‘splash’ continue to tussle, if not capsize completely, every boat in the water.

Nothing is the same in today’s world and certainly nothing is guaranteed. Ideas and institutions commonly regarded as foundational are reconsidered with eyes that ask questions never before imagined. For the most part we don’t have soluble answers yet and it appears that it may be sometime before revamped truths take hold and give some stability to all this rolling and pitching.

The world of design continues to feel the impact of global economic trouble and speculation is afoot as to how the current challenges will manifest themselves in the colors we see on the showrooms and shelves of retailers (clothing, home, auto…etc.) in the coming twelve to eighteen months. In a wonderful piece for Home Accents Today (www.homeaccentstoday.com) that gathers the four major trends anticipated in the industry, Lindsey Strader paints these distinctive canvases with references easy for us to understand. Check out Ms. Strader’s four color forecasts for 2010.

    What Color is Your Recession?

    Color Forecast: Safe Haven

    Color Forecast: Great Escape

    Color Forecast: Radical Rules

    Color Forecast: Natural Embrace

london-mayor-croppedLondon’s Mayor, Boris Johnson on how fat this makes me look.

I know this has never happened to you; you’re in a favorite new outfit attending a swell function and someone snaps a picture for which you serve up your very best Tyra Banks-Supermodel smile. A few days later you see the photo flying around the office. Mortified, you call Jenny herself begging for a helicopter intervention. Gym memberships, new tennis shoes, gallons of bottled water and a padlock on your refrigerator all seem reasonable knee-jerk responses.

AFP – London Mayor Boris Johnson (L) poses with a wax figure of himself at Madame Tussauds on May 5, 2009.

Across the pond it appears that London’s mayor, Boris Johnson has found himself in a similar sinking boat, though on a much more public body of water. Standing beside his freshly minted “self” at London’s Madame Tussauds Wax Museum the mayor voiced shock at how fat he appears.

If a picture is worth a thousand words then Madame Trussauds’ images represent the entire library.

There are times when the distance provided by a photograph aids us in answering our own questions. Wondering if the new sofa in the Living Room is adding the sparkle you hoped for? Uncertain if the drapes in the Dining Room balance well with the new table and chairs? Snap away. Remember the camera doesn’t lie.

DesignCoach: break color rules to make small spaces look larger

Each Monday on the DesignQuotient™ blog, DesignCoach™ James Swan answers readers’ questions. Post your design dilemma. DesignCoach™ can help you find the solution.

This week the DesignCoach discusses (breaking?) color rules to make small spaces look larger.

Q: You know how “they” say you should wear black because it makes you look thinner, is the same true in home design? Do dark colors make a room look bigger or smaller? I know I shouldn’t put horizontal stripes on my room (or vertical ones, either) but are there general rules on the way colors work for a space?

A: In brief the answer to your question is a bit counter-intuitive. Since we perceive space through our ability to understand the distinction between light and dark (shadows) when we use a deep or dark color on walls we actually create the perception of more space. Darkly colored walls lessen the perception of shadows at the corners of the room which reinforces a perception of greater, not lesser space.

Although counter-intuitive, dark colors in smaller spaces can hide shadows and corners to add perceived depth. Although counter-intuitive, dark colors in smaller spaces can hide shadows and corners to add perceived depth.
Photos: Although counter-intuitive, darker colors in smaller spaces can hide shadows and corners to add perceived depth—as shown in this bath and vestibule designed by James Swan and featured in Bathroom Trends magazine.

Books have been written on color theory and application. I find these reads to be very interesting and you might, too. For more information, you might want to check out the subject on Amazon or at your local book store and see what you think.

Let us know if we can help with your design dilemma. Send us your questions.

In the years after the Second World War, Britain experienced a new sense of optimism about the future. Following the Festival of Britain, there was an emphasis on good design for all aspects of home furnishing. Manufacturers increasingly employed artists to design textiles and wallpapers, and used their names as a selling point. Consumers welcomed the new brighter colours and fresh approach to pattern. This exhibition will draw on MoDA’s own collections to show a wide range of wallpapers and textiles from the 1950s. Examples on display will include work by well-known artists and designers like Lucienne Day, Graham Sutherland, Cawthra Mulock and Jacqueline Groag. Those who purchase items from his stand will be offered the chance to appear in his forthcoming show. Admission £5. Free Parking. Gourmet Restaurant.
