Each Monday on the DesignQuotient™ blog, DesignCoach™ Los Angeles interior designer James Swan answers readers’ questions. Post your design dilemma. DesignCoach™ can help you find the solution.

This week on the DesignCoach: Are we re-arranging the deck chairs on the Titanic?.

Q. We’ve gone from a two income household down to one recently. My husband is still working and I’m job hunting. Though our income has been reduced our love for our home has not. There are so many things we want to do in and around our home but hesitate now because of the economy. What’s your advice on decorating during these really hard times?

Image 136

A. Great question and one that deserves a thoughtful response. Not only have I given this thought but I am living the reality of it myself as I downsize every chance I get. I will rely on three words today that sum up my thoughts on this subject. I hope they are helpful to you as they have been to me.

When faced with design and decorating decisions around your house during these challenging economic times remember these three words: Appropriate, Appropriate, Appropriate.

Answer the question “what is appropriate to your own financial situation?” In response you may say that you have money in the bank (far in excess of 6+ month’s savings and your 401K) and you’ve negotiated a very good price for the project you are considering. If this is the case then you may decide that moving forward with the project is “appropriate”. Go for it. At the same time you may decide that, all things considered, this is not an appropriate time for this work to happen. Then you put the project on hold. Period. End of sentence. Do not pull out your credit card. Do not touch the “emergency fund”. Just wait; for in this moment the work you are considering is NOT appropriate.

Remember there are many ways to better the state of your estate that do not cost a lot of money. Use your imagination. Involve your family but most import; continue to enjoy your home. Now more than ever we need our safe haven.

Let us know if we can help with your design dilemma. Send us your questions.

In the years after the Second World War, Britain experienced a new sense of optimism about the future. Following the Festival of Britain, there was an emphasis on good design for all aspects of home furnishing. Manufacturers increasingly employed artists to design textiles and wallpapers, and used their names as a selling point. Consumers welcomed the new brighter colours and fresh approach to pattern. This exhibition will draw on MoDA’s own collections to show a wide range of wallpapers and textiles from the 1950s. Examples on display will include work by well-known artists and designers like Lucienne Day, Graham Sutherland, Cawthra Mulock and Jacqueline Groag. Visit Museum of Domestic Design & Architecture, located at Middlesex University for additional information.

Each Monday on the DesignQuotient™ blog, DesignCoach™ Los Angeles interior designer James Swan answers readers’ questions. Post your design dilemma. DesignCoach™ can help you find the solution.

This week on the DesignCoach: How Can I Afford the Curtains of My Dreams.

Q. My husband and I agree on very few things when it comes to our home. Drapes on windows are one house related thing we agree on. We both like beautiful window coverings. Our problem is how to afford the things we like. Seems that the layers of shades, shears and drapes equal nothing but money? How can we get the look we like without breaking our little bank?

Tidecrest_Her Study

A. Curtains and the lovely layers that can go with them are, often, an expensive proposition. Individually the elements are much more manageable but when put together then add up quickly. As with much long term decorating I recommend getting very clear on the big picture (what do you really want) then break the project down into phases. As funds are available move through the phases until the goal is achieved. Shades (roller, Roman or woven) are a good place to start. Mounted either inside or out these stand alone nicely and play equally well as part of an ensemble cast once the shears and curtains arrive. Break the final two layers down in reverse order (curtains up first followed by shears) if you need three phases (and with the cost of fabrics and trims it’s hard not to need as much time as possible!). If properly anticipated the shears can be added beneath the curtains at a later date. Until then you enjoy a very finished look. But remember to anticipate the space needed for the shear layer when mounting the curtains! You need an additional 4 1/2″ to 5″. Planning ahead means you’ve planned to succeed.

Each Monday on the DesignQuotient™ blog, DesignCoach™ Los Angeles interior designer James Swan answers readers’ questions. Post your design dilemma. DesignCoach™ can help you find the solution.

This week on the DesignCoach: Coping with a challenging space.

Q. I have a sun room in my newly moved into condo. It is off the bedroom, through sliding glass doors. The dimensions are approximately only 5 1/2′ by 19 1/2′. One long wall and one short wall have 4 1/2 foot tall jalousie windows. (I detest them, but it would cost thousands of dollars to replace them.) What I do love about them, is they let enormous amounts of natural light into the sun room and the bedroom. I have a multiple desire for this room as my condo is small in living space. I have the awesome advantage of great natural light as it is a corner unit. What I would like to do is make this space into a combination, home office, meditation and art room ( I like to draw ). How can one turn such a small room with these kinds of windows taking up needed wall space, without having to spend thousands to put in new windows? My dream is to put a sleeper chair with storage ottoman in there as well. Making it a place, that I or a guest can feel at home and have some privacy. I can’t seem to figure out how I can incorporate making it into a home office and do these things. I picture myself using a small ladies writing desk in there, but it really doesn’t afford me the work space needed while I am editing online work or creating anything.

Goleta_hall

A. Long narrow rooms are always a challenge. But we love a good challenge! First the windows: If the windows allow good light into the room but are ugly to look at (and replacement at this time is not an option) my first priority would be to cover or screen the windows while still allowing light into the room. I wonder if floor-to-ceiling shear or semi-sheer drapes might be just the ticket (think netting found in tropical climates). Hang the drapes from the highest point on the wall and carry them to the floor. Maybe drape the three outer walls for consistency and maximum effect. This alone will create a dramatic/romantic feel in the space. Put a sisal area rug on the floor. I would try to orient a work space/desk on one end of the room (running the full 5.5 feet depth). Make the work surface extra deep (30″) to give yourself maximum work space. This might be something as simple as a solid wood or glass panel supported by two decorative table bases or other supports. A comfortable work chair, good table top lighting and your computer should give you a productive place to create. You might consider a rolling easel for your artwork (painting, etc.). On the other end of the room you will have space for as large a reading chair as the space will allow. Cut up cardboard into the maximum size of a chair and place it on the floor to better understand the space an upholstered chair will require. Add to the cardboard or take away depending on the space you have. Measure your cardboard and take these dimensions with you when you shop for a chair. You now know the maximum size chair for your space. Shop smart and buy the most comfortable chair your budget allows.

Inspiration in the Garden & The Color Association’s Fall/Winter 2010/2011 Forecast
June 18, 2009 from 2:00-4:00pm
New York, New York

Join us to find Inspiration in the Garden, a presentation by Robert Funk, paired with an overview of The Color Association’s Fall/Winter 2010-11 forecasts. Watching the organic gardening movement go from hobby category to mainstream activity, Robert Funk finds great potential to design, market and merchandise for this emerging interest. In discussing one of the key influences for the season, he will examine the history and current relativity of the home food garden, focusing specifically on the rising sector of the suburban home gardener, a new addition to the urban and rural gardeners who have already garnished attention. Suburban home gardening is one of the few areas that exhibits economic growth and expansion as a result of the convergence of the ecological awareness movement and these unsettling financial times. The overview of The Color Association’s Fall/Winter 2010-11 forecasts will include an examination of the thoughts and inspirations behind the palettes. The discussion and analysis will highlight the key influences and colors for the season. To register for the event, please call us at the CAUS studio: 212.947.7774 or e-mail caus@colorassociation.com for additional information.

Living Room to come home to.

DesignCoach: What to watch? Home Improvement Shows?

Each Monday on the DesignQuotient™ blog, DesignCoach™ Los Angeles Interior Designer James Swan answers readers’ questions. Post your design dilemma. DesignCoach™ can help you find the solution.

This week on the DesignCoach: What to watch? Home Improvement Shows?

Q: Do you watch any of the home improvement shows? I ask because I find so much of it frustrating. I feel like I have to pretend like I’m sailing the world without a compass, just to navigate which shows are worth my time. What do you suggest for reading and watching so that I can learn not spend my whole time channel surfing and thumbing through magazines at the local book store.

A: I watch very little television so I will not be of any help to you on that account. However, I read constantly and suggest to anyone with an interest in design to do the same. Magazines, while great fun, should be the last thing you spend your time on. Pick a subject of interest to you. Maybe it’s a particular designer or architect whose work you admire.

Maybe it’s a historical period that is attractive to you. Possibly you are interested in a specific decorative art (fabric weaving, rug making, furniture fabrication…etc.). Then find books at your local library or book store which feed these areas of interest. You will be greatly rewarded for your efforts as you learn more about the world of design and decoration.
