Now thru November 30, 2009
New York, New York
http://moma.org/visit/calendar/exhibitions/958

At mid-century MoMA played a leading role in the definition and dissemination of so-called Good Design, a concept that took shape in the 1930s and emerged with new relevance in the decades following World War II. This installation presents selections from MoMA’s design collection that illuminate the primary values of Good Design as promoted (and disputed) by museums, design councils, and department stores. Iconic pieces by designers like Charles and Ray Eames and Hans Wegner are shown alongside more unexpected items, such as a hunting bow and a plumb bob, as well as everyday objects including an iron, a hamper, a rake, a cheese slicer, and Tupperware.

This week on the DesignCoach: President Obama and His ‘Mom-Jeans’: Lessons We Can Learn

Q: As a follow up to last weeks question about finding the perfect sofa I’d like to offer some thoughts on selecting the right color (for a new sofa, paint on the walls or drapery on your windows) as inspired by President Obama and a fashion choice gone wrong! And yes, we will delve deeper into the subject next Monday too.

Carolwood Dining Room

A: While the fashion world may have it’s panties-in-a-wad over the so called ‘Mom Jeans’ worn by the most powerful man in the free world when he through out the ceremonial first pitch at the All-Star Game last week in St. Louis, I found myself intrigued. Doubly so when I heard that he had addressed the “issue” during an interview on NBC’s “Today Show”. Mixed with all the really important stuff like wars, the economy, soaring unemployment figures and the growing health care crisis was this burning concern; to which President Obama conceded that he “looked a little frumpy” in his baggy jeans. Going on to defend himself (from critics circling for the kill) he summed up his choice by stating that “those jeans are comfortable”. Apologies where issued to those who found his fashion flub a real problem and now we wait to see what denim will drape our Head of State, when next the occasion calls.

What I love so much about this story is his frank statement regarding the level of comfort he experienced with his choice in jeans. And there is our lesson for today, kids. Might we aspire to such heights of self-confidence that we could listen to our inner voice and allow it to guide us in matters great and small.

Not certain what color fabric to select for your sofa? Unclear about what color to paint your walls? Have no idea which fabric to select for the new Bedroom Drapes? Maybe it’s time we tune in to our “inner president” and find out what we are most comfortable with. For years I’ve learned more about my client’s preferences and panic’s associated with color by simply browsing through their closets. Ladies, it goes without saying that you have the better deal in the area of personal expression but guys are not completely bared from the game. Even those gentlemen who do a daily ‘serious’ suit and tie routine are allowed to crack the door of self-expression just a tisch when selecting their ties and socks. And the things we learn from those choices. Fascinating. Take a few minutes and assess your wardrobe. You may find that you learn something about what makes you comfortable. Then use what you’ve just learned and apply this knowledge to the choices at hand.

In the years after the Second World War, Britain experienced a new sense of optimism about the future. Following the Festival of Britain, there was an emphasis on good design for all aspects of home furnishing. Manufacturers increasingly employed artists to design textiles and wallpapers, and used their names as a selling point. Consumers welcomed the new brighter colours and fresh approach to pattern. This exhibition will draw on MoDA’s own collections to show a wide range of wallpapers and textiles from the 1950s. Examples on display will include work by well-known artists and designers like Lucienne Day, Graham Sutherland, Cawthra Mulock and Jacqueline Groag. Each Monday on the DesignQuotient™ blog, DesignCoach™ Los Angeles interior designer James Swan answers readers’ questions. Post your design dilemma. DesignCoach™ can help you find the solution.

This week on the DesignCoach: …And You Think Health Care Reform is Difficult; Try Selecting a New Sofa!

Q. : Half-way through life and it’s time for a change. I’ve changed jobs, cities and now it’s time for a change in my living environment. I’ve saved some money and I’d like to buy a new sofa as the old one has more than served its purpose. Help! How do I find the perfect sofa?

DSCF2549

A. : This question reminds me of similar questions which fill the media these days; “How do we find the perfect HealthCare System?” and “How do we select the perfect Supreme Court Justice?” Then there is the timeless quandary “How do I find the perfect black dress?” Not questions for the feint-of-heart, to be certain. But rather than solve all the worlds problems at once let’s focus on the really important question of finding YOUR perfect sofa.

If you’ve read this blog for any length of time you know that I’m not one to toss around the use of ALL CAPS so when I capitalize the word YOUR, it’s for a reason. My “perfect” sofa may not be your “perfect” sofa….so don’t get trapped into listening to your Mother, your neighbor, your boyfriend/girlfriend or the sales help at the nearest furniture emporium. Answer the following questions for yourself and you will be miles ahead in the search for YOUR perfect sofa.

1. Know how much money you are prepared to spend. And in this economy it should be cold cash. Don’t pull out the credit card for this purchase (unless there are miles involved and you REALLY will pay the balance IN FULL at the first of the month). Sofa costs vary (I can show you sofas for $1,000.00 and I can show you sofas for $25,000.00) so know your limit and stick to it.
2. Know your size limitations. Take out a tape measure or use kraft paper or old cardboard boxes to create a template clearly illustrating the maximum sized sofa your room will hold. Do not estimate. Do not guess. Take the measurements and stick with it. It does you no good to find a really great deal on a really great sofa only to discover, upon delivery day, that it does not fit!
3. Know what’s important to you. Do your homework. Is our heart set on down cushions for your new sofa? Does the look of a waterfall skirt make your heart sing? Do piles of pillows make you never want to leave your house? All of these are fine objectives when selecting a sofa. Each has ramifications and typically they has to do with cost. If your heart is set on a down-filled sofa then be prepared to pay the piper. Personally I love a down filled sofa (I have two in my home) and that decision was reflected in the price tag. Remember there are no wrong answers to the question “what’s important to you?” Just be clear on the answers before you arrive at the showroom. And this includes fabrics. Decide before you walk out the door what general fabric category you want. Are you a “Velvet-Gal?” a “Corduroy-Guy?” Do you love Linen? Are you allergic to wool? Are Prints out of the question? Do you salivate over stripes? If you can lock onto one category of fabric imagine how much time you can save when you confidently look your sales consultant in the eye and say “I’d like to see everything you have in solid cotton velvets” when asked about your fabric choices. Then you just have to decide on which color! More on that next week.

Let us know if we can help with your design dilemma. Send us your questions.

Each Monday on the DesignQuotient™ blog, DesignCoach™ Los Angeles interior designer James Swan answers readers’ questions. Post your design dilemma. DesignCoach™ can help you find the solution.

This week on the DesignCoach: What Can We Learn From Sarah Palin?.

Q. Our family has managed to find ourselves, in spite of the economic downturn, halfway through a major addition/expansion to our home. Work began before things fell apart and we’ve been able to keep things moving forward with fairly good success. We’re at a point where we must make decisions on everything (stone, tile, wood stains, light fixtures, plumbing fixtures, etc.). In fact we’re holding up things because we (my husband and I) can’t agree on anything. We’re at a point it seems, where if he says “white” I say “black.” I’m afraid we will never make it through the growing list of items without a divorce. Why is it so hard to agree on things? How can we find things we will both like?

ows_0016

A. : “When the going gets tough, the tough get going” is a saying attributed to Joseph P. Kennedy father of US President John F. Kennedy. In light of last week’s political brake-slam by Governor Sarah Palin of Alaska its truth seems to sting in a particularly fresh way. And sting it should. Nobody likes a quitter and even when things get really bad (and yes, I know of which I speak) it’s never a good time to walk away.

It sounds to me like the disagreements you are experiencing with your husband need to be filtered through an industrial reality check. How fortunate are you to NOT be in the ranks of those loosing there homes due to the economy but instead are building and expanding? Wow. That’s big! Count your blessings before you light into each other over which white toilet to purchase for the Guest Bathroom!

As I get older I have much less patience with people who can’t make up their minds. It seems to me, when we step way back and look at the really big picture, that you and your husband need to “make up your minds” to reach realistic compromises on this “growing list of items” OR come to terms with the fact that you will never finish your home, you will see each other in divorce court and probably will live extraordinarily sad lives as a result. If a paint color, tile selection or faucet design are really that important to you then I’m sure one of our readers has the number of a good lawyer they can share with you.

Let us know if we can help with your design dilemma. Send us your questions.

Each Monday on the DesignQuotient™ blog, DesignCoach™ Los Angeles interior designer James Swan answers readers’ questions. Post your design dilemma. DesignCoach™ can help you find the solution.

This week on the DesignCoach: No Money and an Ugly Kitchen; What To Do?

Q. I have the worlds ugliest kitchen and I can’t stand it any longer. I’ve got a little money set aside but not enough to remodel the way I’d like. What can I do that will help me enjoy my kitchen and not require that I sell one of my children?

Quincy Kitchen Sink

A. Selling one of the children is never a good solution to an ugly room. It may resolve other issues for you…but not this design delima.

Kitchens are challenging even when there is lots of money to spend so your delima raises the bar considerably. But don’t loose hope. There are always ways to make a proverbial “sows ear” turn into a “silk purse”.

Here are four areas to consider:

1. Cabinetry. If you can’t rip it all down then you are faced with one of three choices all of which have there strengths and weaknesses. First you can paint over the existing cabinet surface. Add new hardware and you have a very refreshed kitchen. Second you can paper over the existing cabinet surface. Think about some of the great vinyl textured products on the market and the sky’s the limit a very dramatic look for your kitchen. This type of installation is not for amatures so this won’t be “free” but it is an option. Last you can re-surface the cabinets using a fresh application of laminate. This works best when your existing cabinets are laminated. Again, not something to do yourself but always a fraction of what new cabinets would cost.

2. Back splash. One of my favorite quick kitchen tricks is to pull out the existing back splash and replace is with plate mirror. The surface is easy to clean (amonia and water), heat resistant and can add a layer of drama and interest quickly and inexpensively.

3. Counter Top. Maybe all you need to do is replace the existing counter top to move your kitchen from the drab to the fab. Check out cost effective options and sit back and imagine how a simple clean stone counter might look instead of the old, chipped tile you currently look at each day.

4. Floors. You may not be able to replace the existing flooring material but you can add bold splashes of color and texture by laying down fun interesting area rugs. Focus on todays great solution dyed acrylic products. You will be suprised by the beautiful patterns you can find that are designed to function both indoor and out. Not your Mother’s Astro-turf by any means. Have fun with color and pattern and give a sad kitchen floor a shot in the arm.

Readers, I would love to hear your ideas or see the results of your creative ideas. Send me your thoughs or pictures of your solutions to kitchen delimas.

Bergere Chair

Bergere: A bergère is an enclosed upholstered French armchair (fauteuil) with an upholstered back and armrests on upholstered frames. The seat frame is over-upholstered, but the rest of the wooden framing is exposed: it may be moulded or carved, and of beech painted or gilded or of fruitwood, walnut or mahogany with a waxed finish.
