Legend of Design: Thierry Despont
The world of Thierry W. Despont is a tightly controlled one where assistants blanch when a fax is misplaced, consultants duck behind confidentiality agreements and a woman is dismissed from her job with a kiss on the hand. Design’s dauphin terrible understands that building a mystique is as central to his success as building Xanadus for the country’s wealthiest homesteaders or creating galleries at the new Getty Museum.

In the gathering darkness of a December afternoon in his TriBeCa apartment, Mr. Despont stretched his long frame acrobatically across a red velvet ottoman with the calculated effect of throwing his visitor off balance. The orchestration of the scene continued: the preprogrammed music swelled, first jazz, then Wagner; steaming tea arrived in cups with a bronzed sheen. Mr. Despont flicked a switch, and a fire blazed to life behind two mammoth ram’s head andirons. ”I want to be a man of culture,” he said.
