This week on the DesignCoach: What is one quick-fix project to make your home more beautiful?
Q. My wife has an on-going 10-year “honey do” list for me. It never seems to end and as she reads or sees new things, my list grows. I’m pretty handy and saw that she had visited your website on our home computer. So I’m appealing to you James Swan, what is one thing can I do (small or big, but I’d prefer to not tear down any walls this weekend) to make our house nicer? You know, to get a head-start on this year’s trends or home projects. I’m willing to tackle something that’s usually in her purview: drapes, lamps, pillows and the like. Give me one thing I can do today that will wow her. With Mother’s Day and all on the calendar, I could use a head-start–not to mention the brownie points.
A. Do you have a twin brother? Your wife is a lucky woman to have you (and your tool belt) in her home and life! Honestly, at the top of the list is this rather simple but hugely effective task. It’s not glamorous, but it will dramatically change every room of your home. Replace every light switch in your home with a dimmer then install in-cord dimmers on every table and floor lamp in the house. With an eye toward creating soft pools of light you will add greatly to the beauty and enjoyment of every room in the house.
