1950s Designer Style

Designer Style: Home Decorating in the 1950s

Now thru September 2009
Museum of Domestic Design & Architecture (MoDA)
Middlesex University, Cat Hill, Barnet, Herts, EN4 8HT
United Kingdom
http://www.moda.mdx.ac.uk/exhibitions/current.htm

In the years after the Second World War, Britain experienced a new sense of optimism about the future. Following the Festival of Britain, there was an emphasis on good design for all aspects of home furnishing. Manufacturers increasingly employed artists to design textiles and wallpapers, and used their names as a selling point. Consumers welcomed the new brighter colours and fresh approach to pattern. This exhibition will draw on MoDA’s own collections to show a wide range of wallpapers and textiles from the 1950s. Examples on display will include work by well-known artists and designers like Lucienne Day, Graham Sutherland, Cawthra Mulock and Jacqueline Groag. Visit Museum of Domestic Design & Architecture, located at Middlesex University for additional information.

What Was Good Design? MoMA’s Message 1944-56
Now thru November 30, 2009
New York, New York
http://moma.org/visit/calendar/exhibitions/958

At mid-century MoMA played a leading role in the definition and dissemination of so-called Good Design, a concept that took shape in the 1930s and emerged with new relevance in the decades following World War II. This installation presents selections from MoMA’s design collection that illuminate the primary values of Good Design as promoted (and disputed) by museums, design councils, and department stores. Iconic pieces by designers like Charles and Ray Eames and Hans Wegner are shown alongside more unexpected items, such as a hunting bow and a plumb bob, as well as everyday objects including an iron, a hamper, a rake, a cheese slicer, and Tupperware.

The Museum of Modern Art and P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center announce the winner of the 2009 MoMA/P.S.1 Young Architects Program: the architectural firm MOS. This year marks the tenth anniversary of the program, which affords emerging architectural talents the opportunity to design and present innovative projects. Five finalists selected by an invited nomination process were asked to present an urban landscape for the large courtyard entrance of P.S.1, with the allotted project budget of $70,000. The architects were required to incorporate elements of shade, water, seating, and bar areas into a proposed project. MOS’s winning landscape, Afterparty, will be on view in P.S.1′s outdoor courtyard starting in late June, and will serve as an immersive environment for the 2009 Warm Up summer music series.
