This week on the DesignCoach: Help Me with My Wood Floors!
Q. I want to either have my wood floors refinished or get new wood
floors. I’m not big on having to move everything out of the house for
the sanding. What are the pros and cons of new floor surfaces? Will
older wooden floors add value to the house? Or keep value?
A: Sorry to say but either option will require an inconvenience to your life. Refinishing and installing new (old?) wood floors are both messy time consuming projects and should be carefully considered. My question to you is what do you wish to achieve by this project? If the solid wood floors currently in your home have never been resurfaced and you wish to have a fresh look then refinishing is the answer. If, however, you wish to have a different species of wood on your floors or if the existing wood is worn and can not be refinished then replacing the wood is required.
Secure the names of two or three wood floor specialists in our area. Ask them to your home for a quote. Ask questions and take careful notes. You can learn much from this process and move you steps closer to a more beautiful home.
