This week on the DesignCoach: How Can I Afford the Curtains of My Dreams.
Q. My husband and I agree on very few things when it comes to our home. Drapes on windows are one house related thing we agree on. We both like beautiful window coverings. Our problem is how to afford the things we like. Seems that the layers of shades, shears and drapes equal nothing but money? How can we get the look we like without breaking our little bank?

A. Curtains and the lovely layers that can go with them are, often, an expensive proposition. Individually the elements are much more manageable but when put together then add up quickly. As with much long term decorating I recommend getting very clear on the big picture (what do you really want) then break the project down into phases. As funds are available move through the phases until the goal is achieved. Shades (roller, Roman or woven) are a good place to start. Mounted either inside or out these stand alone nicely and play equally well as part of an ensemble cast once the shears and curtains arrive. Break the final two layers down in reverse order (curtains up first followed by shears) if you need three phases (and with the cost of fabrics and trims it’s hard not to need as much time as possible!). If properly anticipated the shears can be added beneath the curtains at a later date. Until then you enjoy a very finished look. But remember to anticipate the space needed for the shear layer when mounting the curtains! You need an additional 4 1/2″ to 5″. Planning ahead means you’ve planned to succeed.
