Surviving the Times; Things to Edit from Your Home
Whether with the assistance of auction specialists; Craigs List or the nearest curb, it seems people everywhere are simplifying their lives by divesting themselves of “things” they no longer require. Its funny how moments ago the “need” to posses lured us all down a path of consumption that now feels slightly embarrassing. That’s all right. You are not alone.
In fact you are in the company of good people who, as people will, jumped headlong into the silliest of behaviors and now wish there were a graceful way to exit this stage they’ve found themselves on. Wish I could help you with a great strategy for a vanishing act…but I’m too busy photographing my excesses and posting them on the internet for sale.
What I can offer today are the following suggestions of two things we might just be better off without:
1. Television. I’ve probably lost many of you with this suggestion and if so, sorry. I ditched mine a few months ago and once I got done walking around my house like a dazed tourist in Time Square I realized how very little I was missing. I get my news on the internet and watch movies when I want to be visually entertained. The bulk of my “down time” has been spent reading. Since January I have completed 12 books and am blissfully working my way through number 13. Suddenly I have more time for what I decide really matters and that, my Dear Reader, is a beautiful thing.
2. Precious Things. I had a “Lord of The Rings” event recently and watched all three installments back to back. “Precious” as a character was unavoidable. As I look around my home, however, I decided that, like the object in the films, my “precious things” might need to be chucked into a burning lake too. What I’d like to suggest is that you evaluate the worth to you and your family of things in your home that require exaggerated amounts of maintenance. I would not presume to tell you how much is too much or for that matter what might appear on your list, but when viewed on the Really Big Scale of Life it’s interesting how many “things” can be tossed into the fire in favor of time with our loved ones or doing things we really are passionate about.
