This week on the DesignCoach: What to watch? Home Improvement Shows?
Q: Do you watch any of the home improvement shows? I ask because I find so much of it frustrating. I feel like I have to pretend like I’m sailing the world without a compass, just to navigate which shows are worth my time. What do you suggest for reading and watching so that I can learn not spend my whole time channel surfing and thumbing through magazines at the local book store.
A: I watch very little television so I will not be of any help to you on that account. However, I read constantly and suggest to anyone with an interest in design to do the same. Magazines, while great fun, should be the last thing you spend your time on. Pick a subject of interest to you. Maybe it’s a particular designer or architect whose work you admire.
Maybe it’s a historical period that is attractive to you. Possibly you are interested in a specific decorative art (fabric weaving, rug making, furniture fabrication…etc.). Then find books at your local library or book store which feed these areas of interest. You will be greatly rewarded for your efforts as you learn more about the world of design and decoration.
