The Historic Charleston Foundation invites you to explore the interiors and gardens of some of the finest private residences in America during the 62nd Annual Festival of Houses and Gardens through April 18, 2009. Renowned for three centuries as “a city set in a garden,” Charleston welcomes the return of spring each year with its annual Festival tours, which offer guests the rare opportunity to glimpse beyond the facades of these magnificent properties and into their resplendent interiors and gardens.

Each Festival tour allows you to visit eight to ten properties dating from the American colonial period, through the antebellum and Victorian years of architecture, to the early 20th century. Guests can fully enjoy the historic ambience of this centuries-old city during the month-long Festival, which features 11 colonial and antebellum neighborhoods during the peak of the city’s blooming season.

The East Battery tour is an invitation to investigate the links between maritime trade and local commerce that were the sources of prosperity in 18th and 19th century Charleston. Many early harbor-side dwellings, whose ground floors contained shops have survived, are now intermingled with imposing antebellum mansions that together make this one of America’s most impressive domestic streets. Tickets are $45 and may be ordered by calling (843) 722-3405.
